How to become a static security guard in Sydney

December 14 2020

To become a static security guard in Sydney, you must first and foremost enrol yourself in a security training course. Through this program, you should be able to accumulate both the theoretical knowledge and the hard skills required of a security professional. The fundamental job of a security guard is to maintain order and safety for their clients. This can be at a home, office, public venue or during an event, etc. As security professionals are the main form of physical deterrence against criminal activity, it is important the training course you choose to enrol in equips you with the right skills to prevent, dissolve or dissuade crime. A good training course should also upskill you in additional security guard duties such as the management of security equipment (tasers, walkie-talkies, etc.) and technologies (computers, surveillance and CCTVs, etc.).

The next step that needs to be undertaken in order to become a security guard is to ensure you meet the criteria of acquiring a NSW security license. The eligibility criteria can be found on the NSW government website which clearly outlines the requirements; the top four being:

-       Needing to be over 18 years of age

-       Being fit and proper to hold the license sought

-       Have relevant competencies and experience necessary

-       Having successfully completed required training and assessment.

Once you have met the eligible criteria, you can then apply for various difference security licenses, depending on your preference. The most common license initially applied for by newly trained security professionals is the ‘Class 1A Unarmed Guard license’ which authorises the license holder to patrol, protect or guard any property while keeping unarmed (usually placed in shopping centres, offices or casinos, etc.). However, the NSW government website highlights multiple other licenses which a person desiring to become a security guard can choose from (bodyguard, armed guard, Class 2 security consultant, etc.). Once you have acquired a relevant security license, the third and final step is to start applying to security companies in Sydney and getting employed in the one that best suits your talents.
